Lummi Island Cemetery

Welcome to the Lummi Island Cemetery, a historic and serene resting place that reflects the rich heritage of our beloved island community. Also affectionately known as the Beach Cemetery, our grounds offer a tranquil setting for remembrance and reflection.

Our History

The Lummi Island Cemetery's roots trace back to the early 1900s when land was generously cleared under the guidance of the Congregational Church. Those who contributed to this initial endeavor were granted the first burial plots, laying the foundation for what would become a cherished community space.

Over the decades, ownership of the cemetery transitioned through various hands, including the township and the local church managed by the Grange. In 1964, the cemetery became Whatcom County Cemetery District No. 2, solidifying its place within the county's public services. Early records were often incomplete, prompting dedicated efforts in 1952 to identify and document most of the graves. Many individuals initially buried on homesteads were later reinterred here, further enriching the cemetery's historical tapestry.
